How Do You Get to Uchiko from Matsuyama and Walk the Old Town?

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who want to reach Uchiko, a small town in Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku known for its preserved merchant streets. It uses English pages from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) and from Visit Ehime Japan, the prefectural tourism site. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Fares and timetables are not given on these pages, so check them with JR Shikoku before you travel.

The short answer

Go to Matsuyama first, then take a JR limited express to Uchiko Station. JNTO's page on the Uchiko theater says to take a train from Matsuyama Station to Uchiko and that once you are there, the theater is a 10-minute walk away. Another JNTO page puts the limited express from Matsuyama to Uchiko at about 30 minutes.

Reaching Matsuyama

JNTO says it is about a one and a half hour flight from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Matsuyama Airport, and just 50 minutes from Osaka. By rail, JNTO says to take the Shinkansen to Okayama, then the JR Seto-Ohashi/Yosan Line Limited Express to Matsuyama Station. Two JNTO pages give slightly different times for that last leg: a Matsuyama page says two and a half hours, while the Uchiko page says about 2 hours and 45 minutes. The pages do not explain the gap, so allow the longer figure.

From Osaka by train

The JNTO page on Uchiko's historic district gives a full route from Shin-Osaka Station. Take the Sanyo Shinkansen to Okayama Station, which it puts at about 45 minutes. Then take the JR Limited Express to Matsuyama Station, and then the JR Limited Express to Uchiko Station, about 30 minutes. It adds that a 20-minute walk from the station will take you to the meeting spot at the Japanese Wax Museum and Kamihaga Residence.

Walking and cycling in town

The two JNTO pages disagree about distances: 10 minutes on foot to the theater, and 20 minutes to the wax museum. These are different destinations, so both can be right. Visit Ehime says around 93 buildings from the Edo, Meiji and Taisho periods line a 600-meter stretch of the main street through the old town. That is short enough to walk. JNTO also says you can rent a bike from the gift shop near the station, or take a taxi.

Where to start

Visit Ehime says the Preservation Center in an old merchant house explains the history of the area and its ongoing conservation work. It is a sensible first stop before you walk the street. The other sights are described in our other guides on this site.

A food stop on the way

Visit Ehime lists a roadside station, Michi-no-eki Fresh Park Karari, with fresh Uchiko-grown vegetables and fruits, handmade confections and a bakery. It gives hours of 8:00 to 18:00 from March to October and 8:00 to 17:00 from November to February. The page does not say how to reach it without a car, so we do not cover the route.

English-language help

JNTO says Uchiko's Tourism Center offers guided tours of the theater in English if booked in advance. The tour can also include making Japanese washi paper or seeing the Kamihaga residence. The page does not say whether it applies to groups or individuals, so ask before you go.

Is a day trip enough?

Going by the figures above, the limited express leg is about 30 minutes each way, and the old street is 600 meters long. A day trip from Matsuyama is therefore realistic. Visit Ehime lists opening hours of 9:00 to 16:30 for the wax museum and the Honhaga residence, and 9am to 4:30pm for the theater. Plan to arrive in the morning and use the afternoon for the houses.

A note on neighboring Ozu

JNTO describes Ozu, another town in Ehime, as a short trip from Matsuyama by train. It gives the Yosan Line Uwakai Limited Express at around 40 minutes from Matsuyama, with the main sights 20 to 30 minutes on foot from the station. The pages do not say how to link Ozu with Uchiko in one trip, so check a timetable before you try to combine them.
